In this post, there are 3 ways for your to practice the 2 basics stances: horse stance, 马步 (mabu) and bow stance, 弓步 (gongbu).
Before you practice, do not forget to (1) WARM UP, (2) STRETCH, and (3) make sure you have ENOUGH SPACE.
The first exercise is called 跳开马步 (tiao kai mabu), jump open horse stance. During this exercise, from a ready (预备 yubei) position with fists at the waist, jump open into a horse stance, 马步 (mabu).
Check that your stance is correct (refer to our post "Back to Basics (Stances) | Checklist for Stances")
If your stance is correct, aim to open to the accurate stance as quickly as possible after you jump, without needing to make any adjustments and without moving (like a statue)!
The second exercise is called 马步转弓步 (mabu zhuan gongbu), turning stances.
Start from a horse stance position
Right leg* take a small step forward, still in 马步 horse stance
Turn into a 弓步 bow stance, right leg* pushes straight. Check that the stance is correct (refer to our post "Back to Basics (Stances) | Checklist for Stances")
Left leg* take a small step forward into horse stance, get ready to turn the other direction
Turn into a 弓步 bow stance, left leg* pushes straight
Repeat steps 2 to 5
* you can begin with the left leg, if you prefer
The third exericse is called 弓步冲拳 (gongbu chongquan), bow stance punch. The most common basic practice which we do in lessons. This might require more space, so make sure you have enough space around you! Be safe!
Make sure your stances are low
Don't bounce when you shift between stances
Aim, look, and punch to the middle
